Phase II Begins in August!
Dear Thoreau’s Backyard Community,
We’re thrilled to share some long-awaited news: a construction vendor has been selected for Phase II of Thoreau’s Backyard, and work is anticipated to begin in early August!
After a lengthy planning, design, and procurement process, we are excited to see the this nature play and landscaping phase of the project move forward.
What to Expect
Construction is expected to take approximately two months. The district has asked that work involving heavy machinery be completed in August, before students return to school, with the remaining work continuing into the fall.
This phase will bring the natural, park-like areas of Thoreau’s Backyard to life, complementing the playground equipment and accessible rubber surfacing completed during Phase I.
Community-Build Opportunities This Fall
The construction vendor will focus on the major elements of the project, including grading and paving the paths, planting trees, and shaping the new play and gathering spaces.
Once that work is underway, there will be opportunities for families and neighbors to help with some of the finishing touches. We anticipate holding community-build events this fall that may include assembling the playhouses, planting perennials, and adding other decorative details throughout the space.
We’ll share dates and more information as those plans come together.
Nearing the Finish Line
This project has required an extraordinary amount of generosity, problem-solving, and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point—and we can’t wait to watch the rest of Thoreau’s Backyard take shape.
More construction updates and opportunities to participate will be shared soon!
Warmly,
The Thoreau Playground Committee
